“The Second Mother”, the acclaimed Brazilian film directed by Anna Muylaert, will open Friday, August 28th, in New York and Los Angeles, before expanding to other cities in the U.S. The film was first released internationally earlier this year at the Sundance Film Festival, where it received the Special Jury Prize for Acting, and then at the Berlin Film Festival, where it won the Audience Award.
Starring the well-known actress Regina Casé, the film portrays a common social phenomenon in Brazilian affluent capitals: the live in housekeeper, whose life is, at the same time, connected and segregated from the lives of their wealthy employers.
“The Second Mother” takes place in modern day São Paulo and centers around Val (played by Casé), who is happy to take care of everyone’s needs at the family house that she works for – from cooking and cleaning to being a surrogate mother to their son. But when Val’s strangled daughter Jessica (Camila Márdila) suddenly shows up, the unspoken class barriers that exist within the home are thrown into disarray. Jessica is smart, confident and ambitious and refuses to accept the upstairs/downstairs dynamic, testing relationships and loyalties and forcing everyone to reconsider what family really means.
When: August 28th to September 11th
Where: Angelika Film Center and The Paris Theater
