With the goal of promoting Brazilian culture and literature abroad, the Brazilian Fundação Biblioteca Nacional (FBN) has been sponsoring in partnership with the Brazilian Ministry of Culture a record number of translations of Portuguese titles to English. Between 2011 and 2014, nearly 600 books entered the English editorial market, through a funding initiative called “Programa de Apoio à Tradução e à Publicação de Autores Brasileiros no Exterior” or “Program in Support of the Translation and Publication of Brazilian Author Abroad”. The long list includes classics, such as Machado de Assis and Clarice Lispector, and contemporary names, such as Alberto Mussa and Adriano Lisboa.
The grants for 2015 have just been released and are applicable to any editorial company interested in publishing and distributing abroad works of Brazilian authorship previously sold in Brazil. Preferable genres are romance, poetry, short story, children’s books, young adults, comics, theater and essays (literary, social, political and scientific).
