Another Gesture/ Um Outro Gesto/Eine weitere Geste/ is an all-women exhibition that features two Brazilian artists based in New York and São Paulo–Alice Quaresma and Teresa Viana–and two German artists based in Berlin and Munich – Svenja Kreh and Veronika Hilger. These artists present their recent work in a variety of mediums, such as oil painting, drawing, textile, photography, and mixed media.
The curators invite these women to tell their own stories. While Teresa Viana’s felt drawings filter the chaotic urban landscapes of São Paulo, Veronika Hilger’s paintings might be called dreamscapes. If, on one hand, Svenja Kreh’s works on paper show dystopian portals and religious imagery through her references to early German and Renaissance painters, on the other, Alice Quaresma combines photography and abstract painting to playfully comment on the legacies of Brazilian Neo-Concretism and its importance. The show is curated by Brazilian-born Tatiane Santa Rosa and American Cynthia Cruz.
